Planned Parenthood serves campus needs

Cosumnes River College Health Services has been providing Planned Parenthood services to students since July of 2007. They provide services every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A registered nurse and a medical assistant come once a week to CRC to provide reproductive health care services.

The Planned Parenthood services are birth control, pregnancy testing and counseling, HIV testing and counseling, sexually-transmitted disease testing and treatment and emergency contraception.

According to the Planned Parenthood brochure the services are for women, men, and teenagers. All the services are confidential, low or no-cost services and medi-cal are welcome.

For many students who have used the Planned Parenthood services found the program beneficial from their own advantage and the convenience to have the Planned Parenthood available on campus.

"It's extremely convenient because it's closer and since I go to school here and I can just drop by after class," said Sarah Smith, a 19-year-old nursing major.

Other students said the usefulness Planned Parenthood it has being on campus.

"It's very convenient, you don't have to drive to other clinics," said Ashley Pawne, an 18-year-old nursing major.

Other Los Rios District Community Colleges also have Planned Parenthood such as American River and Sacramento City College. Folsom Lake College will start having services once every other week.

Reona James, a nurse in CRC for 29 years said the purpose of the Planned Parenthood is to give access to students for reproductive health care services.

Michelle Barkley, a nurse in CRC for six years attributed the reason why the Planned Parenthood came to the school.

"There has always been a need for it and have found it to be a beneficial service on campus for students," said Barkley.

According to the Planned Parenthood website the program has been serving American's for 90 years. Nearly 880 affiliate health centers are available to provide quality reproductive health care services. Services will continue by offering online services, clinics open in shopping malls and providing mobile clinics. Planned Parenthood also educates the youth and parents about health protection. According to the Planned Parenthood website more than 1.2 million people engage in their educational programs every year.

Planned Parenthood also has an international program according to their website in 17 countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Also they support local organizations, health care providers, and advocates in 19 other countries.

Students from CRC shared what they like about the Planned Parenthood.

"They don't ask questions and they're confidential," said Angela Huls, a 24-year-old childhood development major.

Other students like the Planned Parenthood for their service. "They provide you with free condoms and birth control," said Smith.
